Underbite Treatment
Among the many orthodontic conditions that afflict kids, teens and adults, underbites are among the most serious. In addition to presenting an aesthetic concern, an underbite can cause oral health issues, including rapid tooth erosion and jaw muscle deterioration. For these reasons, underbite treatment should be pursued as quickly as possible. On this page, we provide underbite resources — including an overview of underbites, traditional treatment methods and information on Acceledontics: a revolutionary, fast-acting method of underbite correction with braces. What is an Underbite?
An underbite is an orthodontic condition in which the lower set of teeth overlap the upper set of teeth during a bite. Underbites are significantly less common than overbites, though they belong to the same family of bite-alignment issues (called “malocclusions”), along with crossbites and open bites. They are most commonly caused by genetics, though they can also be caused by bad habits formed during childhood, such as thumb-sucking, prolonged use of a bottle or pacifier and thrusting of the tongue against the bottom set of teeth.
Underbites are of particular concern among orthodontists because of the wide range of health concerns they can pose for patients. For one, underbites can inhibit chewing to a much greater degree than overbites. This can cause great strain on the muscles of the jaw and can lead to expedited erosion of the teeth. Underbites are also quite noticeable and are considered an aesthetic abnormality. For these reasons, timely orthodontic treatment is recommended for all those afflicted with this type of misalignment issue.
Underbite Treatment Options
There are number of treatment options currently available for children and adults. The most common treatment to correct a mild to moderate underbite is braces. Braces move teeth into place over time using brackets and wires. For more severe underbites, additional orthodontic appliances such as retainers, expanders and headgear are sometimes needed. For the most severe underbites, corrective surgery is required to move the jaw into place.
If you are dealing with a mild to moderate underbite and facing the prospect of orthodontic treatment, you may be less-than-enthused about underbite correction with braces. After all, traditional braces are quite noticeable. They can also be uncomfortable and take years to complete. Thankfully, there is an alternative.
